Choosing materials that age well in the tropics
Published January 2025
A working palette of timbers, stones and metals we trust to behave themselves through Mackay summers.

Salt air, intense UV and 90% summer humidity will find every weakness in a material specification. After eighteen years of building in the region, our palette has narrowed to a small set of materials we trust completely.
Timbers
Spotted gum and blackbutt remain our go-to hardwoods externally; white oak and walnut for internal joinery.
Why not merbau?
Tannin bleed and inconsistent supply have moved us away from merbau on visible work.
Stones
- ✦Honed Calacatta for kitchens
- ✦Travertine for outdoor zones
- ✦Granite for high-traffic benchtops
- ✦Tadelakt for shower walls
| Material | Use | Care |
|---|---|---|
| Spotted gum decking | External deck | Annual oil |
| White oak joinery | Cabinetry | Hard-wax finish |
| Calacatta marble | Kitchen island | Sealed annually |
