Choosing materials that age well in the tropics

Published January 2025

A working palette of timbers, stones and metals we trust to behave themselves through Mackay summers.

Choosing materials that age well in the tropics

Salt air, intense UV and 90% summer humidity will find every weakness in a material specification. After eighteen years of building in the region, our palette has narrowed to a small set of materials we trust completely.

Timbers

Spotted gum and blackbutt remain our go-to hardwoods externally; white oak and walnut for internal joinery.

Why not merbau?

Tannin bleed and inconsistent supply have moved us away from merbau on visible work.

Stones

  • Honed Calacatta for kitchens
  • Travertine for outdoor zones
  • Granite for high-traffic benchtops
  • Tadelakt for shower walls
